Posted in Installation Videos
Installing a UWS crossover tool box is one of the easiest upgrades you can make to your work truck. In just a few simple steps, you can add secure storage that keeps your tools organized and protected while leaving most of your truck bed open for materials.
In this installation walkthrough, Ryan from Upfit Supply installs a UWS crossover toolbox on a Ford F-150. The process is quick, requires minimal tools and typically takes less than 20 minutes.
If you're shopping for one of these boxes, start here:
Tools and Hardware Needed
UWS includes everything you need to install the toolbox directly in the package. Inside the box you’ll find:
- Installation instructions
- J-hook mounting hardware
- Washers and nuts
- Torque specifications
Always review the manufacturer instructions included with your box before starting installation. They provide the most accurate specs and fitment guidance.
Step 1: Place the Toolbox in the Truck Bed
The first step is simply placing the toolbox into the bed of the truck. Because UWS toolboxes are made from aluminum, they are relatively lightweight compared to steel boxes.
In most cases, one person can lift the box into the truck bed, though having a second person makes positioning easier.
Set the toolbox across the bed rails behind the cab in the standard crossover position.
Step 2: Remove BedRug Material (Secure Lock Models)
If your UWS toolbox includes the Secure Lock system, you may notice a BedRug liner inside the toolbox. This material helps protect tools and reduce noise during driving.
Before installing the mounting hardware, remove the section of BedRug covering the mounting holes so you can access them from inside the toolbox.
Step 3: Install the Protective Foam Strips
UWS provides adhesive foam strips that should be installed underneath the toolbox wings. These strips sit between the toolbox and the truck bed rails.
The foam serves two purposes:
- Protects the truck’s paint and bed rails
- Prevents vibration between the toolbox and the truck
After applying the foam strips, you may need to trim small sections where the mounting slots are located.
Step 4: Position the Toolbox Against the Cab
Slide the toolbox toward the cab of the truck until it is positioned where you want it. Make sure the toolbox lid can open fully without touching the cab.
It’s important to leave a small amount of clearance so the gas struts and lid can operate properly.
Step 5: Center the Toolbox
Before tightening any hardware, measure the distance from each side of the toolbox to the bed rails to make sure it is centered.
This step ensures:
- The box sits evenly on the truck
- The mounting hardware lines up properly
- The toolbox looks clean and professional once installed
Step 6: Install the J-Hook Mounting Hardware
Most crossover toolboxes use a simple J-hook mounting system. UWS includes two J-hooks — one for each side of the toolbox.
To install:
- Slide the J-hook under the truck bed rail
- Align it with the mounting hole inside the toolbox
- Install the washer and nut
- Tighten the hardware finger-tight initially
The manufacturer recommends torquing the hardware to approximately 25 ft-lb. This keeps the toolbox secure without over-tightening.
Step 7: Check Lid Clearance
Once the mounting hardware is tightened, close the toolbox lid and make sure it clears the truck cab and opens smoothly.
Check that:
- The gas struts move freely
- The lid does not contact the cab
- The latches engage correctly
This final check helps prevent issues after the toolbox is fully installed.
Step 8: Reinstall the BedRug (Secure Lock Models)
If your toolbox came with the BedRug interior liner, you can reinstall it after tightening the mounting hardware.
You may want to trim the liner slightly or cut a small slit so it fits cleanly around the mounting bolts.
Will This Installation Work on Other Trucks?
Yes. One of the reasons crossover toolboxes are so popular is that installation is very similar across most pickup trucks.
Whether you're installing on a:
- Ford F-150
- Ford Super Duty
- Chevy Silverado
- GMC Sierra
- Ram 1500 / 2500 / 3500
The process usually involves the same J-hook mounting system that clamps under the bed rails.
Why Contractors Choose UWS Tool Boxes
UWS toolboxes are popular among contractors and tradespeople because they combine durability with easy installation. Key features often include:
- Heavy-duty aluminum construction
- Foam-filled reinforced lids
- Dual side access
- Gas strut assisted opening
- Simple clamp-style installation

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to install a crossover toolbox?
Most crossover toolbox installations take about 15–30 minutes and only require basic hand tools.
Do I need to drill into my truck bed?
No. Most crossover toolboxes use J-hook clamps that attach underneath the truck bed rails, avoiding the need for drilling.
Can I install a toolbox by myself?
Yes. Aluminum toolboxes are relatively lightweight, so many people install them solo, though having a second person helps with positioning.
Will a UWS crossover toolbox fit other trucks besides an F-150?
Yes. Many UWS crossover boxes are designed to fit most full-size pickup trucks including Ford, Chevy, GMC and Ram models.
