What Sets GPI Apart in the Transfer Pump Category
Two design choices define GPI's competitive position in 12V transfer pumps: aluminum construction and a rotary gear mechanism.
The die-cast aluminum pump body is lighter than cast iron — the M-150 weighs around 24 lbs. — which matters when the pump is mounted to a 2-inch bung on a transfer tank that's bolted into a truck bed. Road vibration over years of daily use puts mechanical stress on the bung connection. A lighter pump reduces that stress and extends the life of both the pump mount and the tank. Aluminum also doesn't rust, which keeps the pump looking and functioning cleanly in truck bed and outdoor environments without the corrosion mitigation that heavier iron construction can require over time.
The rotary gear design uses fewer moving parts than competing vane-pump designs. Fewer parts means fewer wear points, longer intervals between service, and simpler maintenance when service is eventually needed. GPI makes individual replacement kits available for every serviceable component — motors, seals, vanes, gear covers, electrical covers — so a worn part doesn't require replacing the entire pump.
M-150 vs. EZ-8: Choosing the Right Pump for Your Tank
The M-150 Series at 15 GPM is the right pump for most truck bed transfer tank installations. At that flow rate, a 100-gallon tank empties in approximately seven minutes — fast enough for field refueling without being so high-volume that you need a controlled-flow nozzle for every use. The M-150 is designed for permanent bung-mount installation and is GPI's most specified pump for service truck, fleet, and agricultural transfer tank setups.
The EZ-8 at 8 GPM is the right choice when the application is smaller — a 30- or 40-gallon auxiliary tank in a pickup bed, a drum on a flatbed, or a portable fueling caddy. It delivers what GPI describes as gas-station-equivalent flow rates, which is genuinely useful context: 8 GPM is close to what a standard pump island dispenses, so fueling a piece of equipment from an EZ-8-equipped tank feels no slower than a fuel station stop. For operators who need portability and simplicity over high-volume throughput, the EZ-8 is the right tool.
The Spin Collar Mounting System
GPI's Spin Collar is a practical installation feature that gets overlooked in spec comparisons but earns appreciation in real installs. Most bung-mount pumps lock the pump body orientation at the point of threading into the tank — wherever the pump stops when tightened down is where the outlet, cord exit, and nozzle holder point. If that direction is inconvenient for the installation, you're stuck with it.
The Spin Collar separates the pump body from the bung fitting, allowing the pump to rotate freely after the bung adapter is installed and tightened. You tighten the bung first to seal the tank, then rotate the pump body to point everything where you actually want it, then lock it in place. On a truck bed install where space is tight and the cord needs to route a specific direction, this saves real time and frustration.
Gold Medal Performance — Independent Lab Testing
GPI has earned a Gold Medal Performance award through independent laboratory testing for the M-150 Series delivering significantly more operating hours than comparable competing pumps in the same class. GPI attributes this to the aluminum construction and rotary gear design reducing internal wear over time. All GPI pumps are factory-tested before shipping and backed by a 2-year warranty with UL Listing and CSA Certification on the motor.
Built in Wichita Since 1972
Great Plains Industries was founded by engineer Charlie Peer in 1968 and has been manufacturing in Wichita, Kansas since 1972. It remains a privately-held, family-founded company with over 200 employees producing GPI, GPRO, and FLOMEC branded products at the Wichita facility. GPI pumps are made in the USA.
GPI Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the GPI M-150 Series and EZ-8 Series?
The M-150 delivers up to 15 GPM and is built for permanent transfer tank installations on trucks, trailers, and agricultural equipment. The EZ-8 delivers up to 8 GPM and is the lighter, more compact option for smaller tanks, drums, and portable fueling setups. Both share the same rotary gear design and die-cast aluminum construction.
What fuels are GPI pumps compatible with?
Both the M-150 and EZ-8 handle diesel (up to B20), gasoline (up to E15), and kerosene. Select M-150 models are also rated for AVGAS 100LL, Jet A, and Jet A-1. GPI offers separate pump models for methanol applications.
How does the GPI Spin Collar work?
The Spin Collar separates the pump body from the bung fitting, so you can rotate the pump freely to point the outlet, power cord, and nozzle holder in the most convenient direction after the bung fitting is installed and tightened. Lock it in place once oriented correctly. It's a meaningful advantage in tight truck bed installations.
Why does aluminum construction matter in a transfer pump?
Die-cast aluminum is lighter than cast iron — less bung stress during road vibration — and corrosion-resistant without rusting. The M-150 weighs approximately 24 lbs., which reduces the mechanical load on the 2-inch bung connection over years of daily use in a truck bed.
What is included with the GPI M-150 Series pump?
The M-150 Series ships with the 12V DC pump, manual or automatic nozzle (model-dependent), 12-foot grounded hose, 18-foot factory-installed power cord, adjustable suction pipe (15"–40"), Spin Collar, lockable nozzle holder, and fuse assembly. A flow meter is not included and must be purchased separately.
What warranty do GPI pumps carry?
Both the M-150 and EZ-8 carry a 2-year warranty. GPI motors are UL Listed and CSA Certified. Note: GPI's warranty period starts at the date of manufacture, not the date of purchase — worth confirming when buying from distributor stock that may have been warehoused for a period.
Are GPI pumps field-serviceable?
Yes. The rotary gear design is built for field service. GPI sells individual replacement kits for motors, seals, vanes, gear covers, and electrical components — so you can replace a specific worn part rather than the entire pump unit.
Where are GPI pumps made?
GPI pumps are manufactured in Wichita, Kansas. Great Plains Industries has been building fuel transfer equipment in Wichita since 1972 and remains a privately-held, family-founded American manufacturer.
