If your pickup truck is your mobile workshop, organization matters. A Weather Guard crossover (saddle) tool box is one of the simplest ways to add secure storage without sacrificing bed space.

This video covers how to position the box, clamp it to your bed rails, torque the hardware and set up the lock cylinder so your new box is ready for daily jobsite use.

What Is a Weather Guard Crossover Tool Box?

A crossover tool box (often called a saddle box) mounts across the bed rails of your pickup truck, typically behind the cab. It’s a go-to upgrade for tradespeople who want secure, easy-access storage without giving up the full bed.

  • Securely stores tools and equipment
  • Keeps frequently used gear easy to reach
  • Preserves bed space underneath the box
  • Helps protect tools from weather and theft

Tools and Materials Needed

Most Weather Guard boxes are designed to be installer-friendly. Before you start, gather:

  • Weather Guard crossover tool box
  • Installation hardware (included with the box)
  • Socket or wrench set
  • Tape measure
  • Torque wrench
  • Smartphone (to access the manufacturer installation guide)

Step-by-Step: Weather Guard Crossover Tool Box Installation

Step 1: Download the Manufacturer Installation Guide

Open the packaging and locate the installation guide. Weather Guard often includes a QR code you can scan to view the latest instructions on your phone.

Following the manufacturer guide helps ensure proper fitment, correct hardware placement and the right torque specs for your exact model.

Step 2: Position the Tool Box and Center It

Place the crossover box across the bed rails directly behind the cab. Use a tape measure to confirm it’s centered in the bed.

This keeps weight balanced, helps your clamps line up cleanly and gives you a more professional-looking install.

Step 3: Install the Bed Rail Clamps

Weather Guard crossover boxes typically mount with clamps that hook under the bed rail. The bolts pass through pre-cut holes in the box and tighten into the clamp hardware beneath the rail.

  1. Position the clamp under the bed rail.
  2. Align it with the pre-cut mounting holes inside the tool box.
  3. Insert the bolt through the box and into the clamp area.
  4. Add the washer and lock nut.
  5. Tighten until snug.

Most setups use two mounting points per side.

Step 4: Torque the Hardware to Spec

Once the bolts are snug, torque them to the manufacturer specification. In the video, Ryan torques the clamps to about 5 ft-lbs, but always confirm your exact number in the installation guide included with your box.

Using the correct torque helps prevent movement and protects your bed rails and mounting hardware from damage.

Step 5: Drop In (and Optionally Secure) the Accessory Tray

If your box includes an accessory tray, set it in place. You can leave it loose for quick removal, or use the side holes with self-threading screws to keep it from sliding around.

Step 6: Key the Lock Cylinder

To set the lock to your keys:

  1. Remove the sticker from the lock cylinder.
  2. Insert your key.
  3. Turn the key about ¾ of the way to set (key) the lock.
