If you're looking to add secure storage to your pickup without sacrificing the entire bed, Weather Guard Lo-Side truck tool boxes are a great option. These boxes mount along the inside of your truck bed rails, giving you easy access from the side while keeping your tools protected.

In this video, Ryan from Upfit Supply walks through a Weather Guard Lo-Side box installed on a Ford F-150 and explains how these boxes fit, how they work with crossover boxes and why they’re a popular upgrade for work trucks.

This overview covers box sizing, storage capacity, lock features and installation considerations so you can decide if a Lo-Side toolbox is the right fit for your truck.

What Is a Weather Guard Lo-Side Truck Box?

A Lo-Side truck toolbox mounts along the inside edge of your truck bed rail and is accessed from the side of the truck. Unlike crossover boxes that sit across the front of the bed, Lo-Side boxes run along the side of the bed.

This configuration allows you to add storage while still keeping much of your truck bed open for materials, equipment and cargo.

Many tradespeople combine Lo-Side boxes with a crossover box for a complete truck storage setup. If you're considering that type of configuration, you can explore our collection of Weather Guard crossover tool boxes or browse all available truck tool boxes.

Example Setup: Ford F-150 Short Bed

The truck featured in the video is a Ford F-150 with a 5.5-foot bed. In this case, the truck is equipped with a 41-inch Weather Guard Lo-Side box.

Weather Guard Lo-Side boxes are typically purchased based on length, allowing you to choose a box that fits your truck bed configuration.

In this setup:

  • A Weather Guard crossover box is mounted at the front of the bed
  • The 41-inch Lo-Side box sits behind it
  • About four inches of space remains near the tailgate

This combination provides a balanced storage layout while keeping the majority of the bed open for hauling materials.

Low Profile Design

The Lo-Side box shown in the video features a low-profile design. That means the portion of the toolbox that extends above the bed rail is lower than traditional boxes.

This provides a few advantages:

  • Cleaner appearance
  • Improved rear visibility
  • A more streamlined truck profile

Low-profile boxes pair well with low-profile crossover boxes when you're building a cohesive storage system for your truck.

Available Materials and Finishes

Weather Guard offers several finishes and materials depending on the model you choose.

Common options include:

  • Matte black aluminum
  • Textured black
  • Standard aluminum diamond plate
  • Gunmetal gray

These options allow you to match the toolbox to your truck’s look while still getting professional-grade durability.

Key-Alike Lock System

One of the most convenient features of Weather Guard toolboxes is the ability to key multiple boxes alike.

Weather Guard ships the locks unprogrammed. The first key used in the lock programs it permanently. That means you can use the same key across multiple boxes if you install them at the same time.

This makes it easy to run one key for all of your Weather Guard storage — whether that’s Lo-Side boxes, crossover boxes or additional toolboxes on your truck.

Improved Weather Guard Lock Design

Weather Guard’s newer 04-series boxes feature an improved lock design.

When the box is locked, the button sits recessed inside the toolbox. This design helps:

  • Reduce tampering
  • Protect the lock mechanism
  • Make it easy to see when the box is locked

At a glance, you can quickly confirm that your tools and equipment are secure.

Weather Protection and Lid Strength

Weather Guard toolboxes are built for jobsite durability, and that includes protecting your gear from the elements.

Inside the lid you'll find a heavy-duty weather seal that runs around the entire perimeter of the toolbox.

This seal features Weather Guard’s multi-ridge design, which helps prevent moisture, rain and debris from entering the box.

The lid itself is reinforced with strong steel supports that minimize flex and keep the lid rigid during use.

Smooth Gas Strut Operation

Lo-Side boxes use gas struts to control how the lid opens and closes.

This means:

  • The lid opens smoothly with the push of a button
  • The box stays open while you access your tools
  • The lid won’t slam shut unexpectedly

It’s a small detail that makes a big difference when you’re working out of your truck throughout the day.

Interior Storage Space

Most of the storage capacity of a Lo-Side toolbox sits inside the truck bed, not above it.

This is what makes Lo-Side boxes different from high-side boxes, which sit on top of the bed rails.

The design gives you strong storage capacity while still allowing space above the rails for larger materials.

Installation Overview

Installing a Weather Guard Lo-Side toolbox is relatively straightforward, but it does require a few extra mounting steps compared to a crossover box.

The installation includes:

  • Clamps that attach to the truck bed rails
  • Mounting brackets that secure the box to the bed floor
  • Drilling into the truck bed floor and the toolbox side panels

If you are running a crossover box in front of the Lo-Side box, you can also use an angle bracket to connect the two boxes. This can reduce the number of mounting points required in the bed floor.

Built-In Tie Down Points

Weather Guard Lo-Side boxes also include interior tie-down points that can be used for securing smaller tools, gear or materials.

These tie-downs are designed for lighter loads and everyday jobsite use, giving you additional flexibility when organizing your truck bed.

Weather Guard Lifetime Warranty

Another major benefit of Weather Guard equipment is the lifetime warranty included with their products.

This warranty protects against manufacturing defects and reflects the long-term durability these toolboxes are known for.
