- Transfer Tanks — Portable fuel storage tanks that sit in the truck bed and dispense fuel out to equipment, generators, and other vehicles via a pump and hose. The standard setup for contractors and fleet operators who need an on-site fueling capability. Available in aluminum and steel, 35–200+ gallons. Carried by all seven brands we stock.
- Auxiliary Fuel Tanks — Permanently plumbed into the truck's fuel system to extend driving range. Fuel transfers from the auxiliary tank into the main tank while you drive — no separate dispensing pump required. DOT-certified for diesel; ATI also offers DOT-approved auxiliary tanks for gasoline. Available from RDS, ATI, Dee Zee, and Transfer Flow.
- Tank / Toolbox Combos — A transfer tank and a lockable toolbox built as a single unit. Available from RDS, ATI, Dee Zee, UWS, and Better Built in aluminum and steel, 43–111 gallons. The most bed-efficient setup for contractors who need both fuel transport and tool storage.
Transfer Tank vs. Auxiliary Tank — Which Do You Need?
These two products are frequently confused, and buying the wrong one is an expensive mistake. The distinction comes down to what you're doing with the fuel.
- If you need to refuel equipment in the field — skid steers, generators, tractors, ATVs, or other trucks — you need a transfer tank. It dispenses fuel out through a pump and hose to whatever needs it. All seven brands we carry make transfer tanks.
- If you need more range for your own truck — to avoid stopping on long hauls, or to take advantage of cheaper fuel when you find it — you need an auxiliary fuel tank. It's plumbed into your truck's fuel system and extends how far you can drive before hitting a pump. Available from RDS, ATI, Dee Zee, and Transfer Flow.
- If you need both fuel transport and tool storage without sacrificing extra bed space for a separate toolbox, a tank/toolbox combo handles both in a single footprint.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a transfer tank and an auxiliary fuel tank?
A transfer tank is a portable tank that sits in the truck bed and dispenses fuel out to equipment or other vehicles through a pump and hose — it's a mobile fueling station. An auxiliary fuel tank is plumbed directly into the truck's fuel system to extend your vehicle's driving range. Fuel flows from the auxiliary tank into your main tank while you drive. You cannot legally connect a transfer tank to your truck's fuel system as an auxiliary tank.
Which brands make auxiliary fuel tanks?
Not all brands we carry make auxiliary tanks. RDS Manufacturing, ATI (Aluminum Tank Industries), Dee Zee, and Transfer Flow offer auxiliary tank options. Weather Guard, UWS, and Better Built make transfer tanks and combos only.
What is a tank/toolbox combo?
A tank/toolbox combo is a single unit that combines a transfer tank and a lockable toolbox in one package. The tank section handles fuel storage and dispensing; the toolbox section provides secure, weatherproof tool storage. Combos are ideal for contractors who need both capabilities without two separate units taking up bed space. Available from RDS, ATI, Dee Zee, UWS, and Better Built.
Are transfer tanks legal for gasoline?
Transfer tanks can legally carry gasoline for dispensing to equipment on job sites. What's not legal is gravity-feeding gasoline directly into a vehicle's fuel system. ATI is the standout brand here — they hold a DOT special permit making their transfer tanks legal in all 50 states for gasoline, diesel, kerosene, methanol, and aviation fuel. Better Built and UWS transfer tanks are rated for diesel only.
Do I need a permit to carry a fuel transfer tank?
Regulations vary by state and fuel type. Most states require DOT-approved tanks for transporting diesel or gasoline on public roads. Check your state's requirements and confirm the tank's certifications before purchasing for road use.
