If you own a Ford F-150 or Super Duty truck and are looking to remove the factory plastic drop-in bed liner, you’re in the right place. Whether you’re upgrading to a spray-in bed liner, adding a bed mat, or just prefer an uncovered truck bed, this guide will walk you through the simple steps to remove your factory liner.
Why Remove Your Factory Bed Liner?
The factory plastic drop-in bed liner serves its purpose, but it’s not for everyone. Some reasons you might want to remove it include:
- Upgrading to a spray-in bed liner for a more durable and long-lasting solution.
- Installing a bed mat for added grip and protection without the bulk.
- Reducing cargo slippage, as plastic liners can be quite slippery.
- Checking for hidden rust or damage that may have developed under the liner over time.
Tools You’ll Need
This process is straightforward and requires minimal tools:
- A flathead screwdriver or trim removal tool
- A utility knife (optional for cutting stubborn clips)
- A little elbow grease!
Step-by-Step Removal Process
1. Locate and Remove Retaining Clips
The bed liner is held in place by two plastic clips, often referred to as “Christmas tree” clips. These are typically found behind the small pillar at the front of the truck bed.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or trim removal tool to pry out the clips.
- Be prepared—these clips may break during removal, which is normal.
- To save time, you can cut the clips off if you don’t plan on reusing them.
2. Loosen and Lift the Liner
Once the retaining clips are removed:
- Lift the liner from the center section to free it from the bed.
- With the liner loosened, you can either pull it straight out or slide it off the side of the truck bed.
- If the liner has been in place for a while, it may take some extra force to remove.
3. Clean the Truck Bed
If your truck is several years old and has never had the liner removed, you might find dirt, debris, or even signs of rust underneath.
- Run your truck through a car wash or rinse out the bed to clean any accumulated grime.
- If you plan to install a new liner or bed mat, make sure the surface is dry before proceeding.
What’s Next?
With the factory bed liner removed, you now have the flexibility to choose the best protection for your truck bed. Whether it’s a spray-in liner, a custom-fit bed mat, or even a structural load floor like the one we’re installing, your truck is now ready for its next upgrade.
