The Road Armor Difference — What Sets These Bumpers Apart
Steel That's Actually Thick
Road Armor publishes their steel specs openly because the numbers are the argument. Face plates run 1/4-inch thick — almost 2.5 times thicker than a competitor using 12-gauge (0.105-inch) sheet. Inner structure runs 3/16-inch — again, nearly 2.5 times thicker than 10-gauge alternatives. Winch mounting plates are also 1/4-inch. The light mount tabs are formed 3/16-inch plate, keyed into the bumper and welded — not just welded to the surface. The math is simple: more steel means more capacity to absorb impact without deforming, and more material between the impact and your truck's frame and radiator.
A36 Descaled Steel — Better Than Standard
Road Armor specifies A36 premium descaled steel. Descaling removes the mill scale — the thin oxide layer that forms on hot-rolled steel during manufacturing. Mill scale is hard, brittle, and chemically different from the steel beneath it. When left in place, it creates a weak bond point between the steel and any powder coat or paint, leading to premature adhesion failure, bubbling, and rust underneath the finish. Descaled steel gives the powder coat a clean, consistent surface to bond to — which is why Road Armor's finish holds up better under the scratches and rock contact that a bumper's life involves.
Laser Cut, Not Plasma Cut
Every piece of steel at Road Armor is precision laser cut. Laser cutting produces tighter dimensional tolerances and cleaner edges than plasma cutting — which means components fit together more accurately during assembly, welds sit more precisely, and the finished bumper has a tighter, more consistent profile on the truck. It's a manufacturing choice that matters most when you're fitting a 200-lb steel structure to the exact front-end geometry of a specific truck model.
Custom DuPont Powder Coat
Road Armor developed their own custom powder coat formula in partnership with DuPont — engineered specifically for high scratch resistance. Standard powder coat finishes scratch relatively easily under trail and job site contact. Road Armor's custom formula holds up significantly better under the kind of brush, rock, and debris contact that front bumpers encounter regularly. The standard finish is satin black. If you want a custom color, Road Armor can ship the bumper raw (bare metal) for local custom finishing — contact our team for details on raw steel orders.
Lifetime Structural Warranty
Road Armor backs every bumper with a lifetime structural warranty for as long as you own it. This is the warranty that matters — not a 1-year or 3-year coverage window, but a genuine lifetime commitment that reflects how the company builds. Road Armor bumpers have survived barn fires, head-on collisions with concrete barriers, and impacts with fully loaded semi trucks — with documented accounts from customers on the company's own website. The warranty exists because the construction earns it.
About Road Armor
Road Armor was founded in 2000 in Texas with a specific goal: build a steel replacement bumper that functioned as well as it looked. The prevailing aftermarket bumpers at the time were either heavy-duty but visually crude, or styled but structurally inadequate. Road Armor's answer was the Stealth series — a smooth-faced steel bumper that could take serious impact, accept a winch, mount lights, and still look like it belonged on the truck rather than bolted to it. The Stealth line launched in 2000 and became the reference point for the category. Multiple competitors have since produced similar smooth-face designs; Road Armor considers the Stealth the original.
The company has grown its product lineup significantly since then — adding the ranch-heritage Vaquero, the modern Evolution series, the modular iDentity (which ships raw for custom color matching), the Spartan full-width heavy-duty line, and the Dakar series. Road Armor also expanded beyond bumpers into skid plates, rocker guards, bed rack systems (Treck), Jeep-specific body armor, and winches. All products are designed, welded, and powder coated in the United States. Road Armor bumpers have found their way onto law enforcement vehicles, ranching operations, off-road builds, and — notably — US military and allied forces vehicles. The company backs every bumper with a lifetime structural warranty that doesn't expire.

Frequently Asked Questions — Road Armor
What is the difference between Road Armor Stealth and Vaquero bumpers?
The Stealth is Road Armor's flagship smooth-face bumper — the most customizable series with multiple grille guard, light mount, and winch configurations for both light-duty and heavy-duty trucks. The Vaquero is Road Armor's ranch-heritage bumper — 11-gauge steel outer shell with Schedule 40 pipe guard, designed for maximum front-end protection with a classic working-truck look. Both use American steel and carry a lifetime structural warranty. Choose Stealth for more configuration options and a modern profile; choose Vaquero for an aggressive guard design with a ranch/farm-tough aesthetic.
What makes Road Armor steel thicker than other bumper brands?
Road Armor uses 1/4-inch face plates and 3/16-inch inner structure — nearly 2.5 times thicker than many competing brands using 10 or 12-gauge sheet. They also use A36 descaled premium steel (no mill scale), which improves powder coat adhesion and corrosion resistance. Every piece is laser cut for tighter tolerances, and all welds are ground smooth — no grind marks on the bumper face.
Will a Road Armor bumper work with my factory sensors and tow hooks?
Yes on most applications. Road Armor engineers their bumpers to accommodate factory parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, and camera systems. Vaquero bumpers specifically accommodate OEM tow hooks and factory fog lights. Always confirm sensor compatibility for your specific year and model on the product listing or by contacting our team.
What winch capacity do Road Armor bumpers support?
Road Armor winch bumpers support winches up to 12,000 lbs. (12K). The winch plate is built from 1/4-inch reinforced steel. Road Armor also makes their own 12K Adventure Series Electric Winch with IP68-rated waterproof construction and synthetic rope.
How long does it take for a Road Armor bumper to ship?
In-stock bumpers ship within approximately 48 hours. Made-to-order bumpers have variable lead times depending on current production. Contact our team before ordering for the most accurate timeline on your specific bumper. Road Armor bumpers ship freight — a valid phone number is required at checkout for freight delivery coordination.
What trucks does Road Armor make bumpers for?
Ford F-150, F-250/350/450/550 Super Duty; Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and 2500/3500 HD; GMC Sierra 1500 and 2500/3500 HD; RAM 1500 and 2500/3500; Toyota Tundra and Tacoma; Jeep Wrangler (JK and JL); Jeep Gladiator; Ford Bronco. Vehicle-specific fitment is required — confirm your year, make, and model before ordering.
