About Sortimo
Sortimo was founded in 1973 by Herbert Dischinger in Augsburg, Germany. Dischinger had spent over a decade running a wholesale fastening business for tradespeople — selling screws, plugs, drills, and tools — and watched his customers store everything in cardboard boxes and plastic bags stuffed into the back of their vans. His solution was a standardized metal case with precisely fitted plastic inset boxes that organized small components in a way that was portable, stackable, and immediately visible. That metal case became an industry standard, and Sortimo's dimensions became the reference point for an entire product ecosystem.
The company name is an abbreviation of the German phrase sortiment mobil — mobile assortment. It's an accurate description of what Sortimo has built over five decades: a system where every component is sized to connect to the next, so a tradesperson can move tools and materials from workshop to van to job site without reloading, repacking, or losing track of what's where. Today that principle is called the Sortimo EcoSystem, and it spans SR5 van shelving, T-BOXXes, SR-BOXXes, ProClick tool bags, WorkMo mobile cabinets, SoboGrip floors, and accessories from both Sortimo and partner brands including Bosch.
All Sortimo products are manufactured at a single production site in Zusmarshausen, Bavaria — the same location where the company has produced its own products since 1980. Sortimo was the first company in its industry to achieve DIN EN ISO 9001 quality management certification (1994), and all products carry TÜV certification. The SR5 shelving system is now in its fifth generation, incorporating over 50 years of field feedback from tradespeople across 35 countries.
The Sortimo EcoSystem — How It Works
What separates Sortimo from generic van shelving is that the products are designed as a system, not as individual items. The aluminum side profiles of an SR5 shelf accept SR-BOXXes, drawer units, long-component trays, and ProSafe load-securing hardware — all without tools, all adjustable in height and depth. The same SR-BOXXes that slide into the van shelving can be lifted out and carried to the job site. A T-BOXX organizing small parts snaps onto a ProClick hook to mount on the shelving, on a WorkMo mobile station, or on a tool belt. A ProClick bag clicks off the belt and back onto the SR5 rail. The SoboGrip floor includes built-in ProSafe lashing points that work with the same ProSafe hardware integrated into the SR5 frame above it.
The result is that every Sortimo product you add improves the usefulness of everything you already have. It's a modular system designed to grow with your business — start with a shelving package and a floor, add a partition, expand with accessories as your workflow demands change. For fleet managers, that modularity also means consistent configurations can be replicated across vehicles and updated when processes change, rather than replacing entire installations.
Sortimo Van Shelving by Trade
Sortimo builds trade-specific shelving configurations because an electrician's van and a plumber's van have fundamentally different storage requirements. Pre-configured Xpress packages are available for electricians, HVAC technicians, plumbers, and general service contractors — each with shelf layouts, drawer dimensions, and BOXX configurations optimized for that trade's tools and consumables. Custom configurations can be built using the mySortimo online configurator, which generates a 3D preview and a parts list you can order directly.
Not sure which configuration fits your trade and van? Contact our team — we can help you choose between a pre-configured Xpress package and a custom build, and confirm vehicle compatibility for your specific van model and wheelbase.
Frequently Asked Questions — Sortimo
What is Sortimo van shelving?
Sortimo van shelving refers to the modular aluminum racking systems Sortimo builds for cargo vans. The flagship system is the SR5 — a fifth-generation shelving platform built from lightweight aluminum side profiles that mount along the walls of your van cargo area. SR5 shelves, drawers, SR-BOXXes, and accessories all bolt or slide into the same frame, so the entire load space can be configured and reconfigured without tools. Sortimo van shelving is designed for tradespeople and fleet operators who need a permanent, professional mobile workspace rather than a generic shelf.
What is the Sortimo EcoSystem?
The Sortimo EcoSystem is Sortimo's cross-product compatibility standard. Products built to EcoSystem dimensions — SR5 shelving, T-BOXXes, SR-BOXXes, ProClick tool bags, SoboGrip floors, and more — are all designed to fit together. A T-BOXX snaps onto a ProClick hook. An SR-BOXX slides into an SR5 shelf rail. A ProClick bag clips onto an SR5 side profile or a tool belt. The EcoSystem means you can buy incrementally and everything works together, and it extends to compatible products from Bosch and other partners.
What vans does Sortimo shelving fit?
Sortimo makes vehicle-specific shelving packages and floors for the most common cargo vans in the US market, including the Ford Transit, Ford Transit Connect, Mercedes Sprinter, RAM ProMaster, Chevrolet Express, and GMC Savana. Vehicle-specific mounting hardware and SoboGrip floor inserts are cut to match the exact floor dimensions and corrugation patterns of each van model. Contact Upfit Supply if you need confirmation that your specific van model and wheelbase are supported.
What is the Sortimo ProPartition?
The Sortimo ProPartition Light is Sortimo's cargo van partition wall. It's up to 50% lighter than conventional steel partitions while meeting the same load-securing safety requirements. A single design fits both high-roof and mid-roof vans. The ProPartition Light includes an integrated ProSafe rail that's fully compatible with the Sortimo EcoSystem, allowing ProClick bags and other accessories to mount directly to the partition. Available in transparent (rear visibility) and opaque options.
What is the Sortimo SoboGrip floor?
The Sortimo SoboGrip is a vehicle-specific installation floor made from 7-ply, water-tight, bonded Nordic birch plywood. It's cut to match the exact dimensions of your van's cargo floor — including the corrugations — and installs as a flat, solid platform that SR5 shelving can bolt directly into. The SoboGrip also includes integrated ProSafe lashing points for securing cargo or equipment directly to the floor.
What is the Sortimo ProClick system?
ProClick is a tool bag and belt system co-developed by Sortimo and Bosch through their BS Systems joint venture. It uses a patented click-hook mechanism: a hook on the bag snaps into a ProClick holder on a tool belt, SR5 shelf rail, or compatible Sortimo product. This lets a tradesperson carry bags on their person while working, then click them back onto the van shelving or a WorkMo mobile station when returning to the vehicle. ProClick bags are available in multiple sizes and are compatible with both Sortimo and Bosch tool systems.
