First, it keeps items from falling out the back of the shelf. Open-back shelving units are useful for accessibility, but if your van takes a hard stop or a tight corner, anything sitting near the back of a shelf can fall behind the unit and get lost or damaged. The back panel eliminates that entirely.
Second, it enables a fully enclosed lockable compartment. If you add a lockable shelf door to the front of the same shelf section, and a back panel to the rear, you have a completely enclosed storage cavity that locks. This is useful for keeping small or valuable items secure on the job site without needing to add a full locking cabinet to your build.

The product itself is a piece of steel in Weather Guard's bright white powder coat finish, matching the shelving units exactly so the build looks clean and intentional rather than patched together. Pre-drilled holes along the edges line up with existing holes on the Weather Guard shelving unit itself, so there is no additional drilling required to mount it. Hardware is included in the box - serrated bolts, serrated lock nuts, and washers - so you have everything you need for the install straight out of the package.
Sizing and How to Order
The back panel is ordered by the width of your shelf. This particular unboxing covers the 52-inch wide version, but Weather Guard makes back panels for all of their standard shelving widths. If you have a 42-inch shelf, you order the 42-inch back panel. If you have a 60-inch shelf, you order the 60-inch back panel. The same matching rule applies if you want to pair it with a lockable shelf door to create an enclosed compartment - both the door and the back panel need to match the width of the shelf.
